Benefits of sketching in the logo design process.

First, let’s see an example of sketching in the logo design process.

This picture is from my sketchbook. There isn’t one way to do it. Everyone has their own way of sketching. Don’t get demotivated if others have a different sketching style than you. Never underestimate your sketching technique. Everyone is unique and their design process too. When you do sketching for the first time, your sketching may be not that good, but with time you will see that your sketching skill will get better.

Now, Lets talk about some benefits of sketching in the logo design process.

A. Helps in fast concept development.

Whenever ideas come to our mind quickly we can sketch them on paper. For example, if we want to make a logo, we can quickly sketch many concepts of a logo and after this we can prioritize them. (There is no such thing as a bad idea. At a time of concept development we just have to come up with lots of ideas we can prioritize the ideas later). If we create concepts in computer it will take more time and while making a concept some ideas will skip from our mind but when we have a pencil in our hand, we can put many ideas on paper in short time. We do not need to draw very clean sketches. We can just draw rough sketches and later vectorize them in computer or if you like professional type of sketches you can draw them professionally. You can see below an example my of rough concept development.

B. Helps to keep our ideas with us.

Sometimes suddenly ideas comes to our mind, we can quickly sketch them on paper before they left our brain. If we have sketched ideas on paper, at any time (maybe after days, months, or years) we can vectorize them on a computer because our ideas are present on paper in the form of sketches. If we sketch our ideas in our sketchbook and use some of them. The unused ideas will remain in our sketchbook. We can use those ideas in any other projects acc. to the requirements. All this will possible if we have our ideas in our sketchbook. So sketching helps to keep our ideas with us.

C. Helps to protect our eyes from screen light.

As you already know screen (blue) light is not good for our eyes health. If we skip sketching (on paper) and directly work on the computer this take more time and we’ll spend more time in front of a computer screen that is not good for our eyes. So by sketching (on paper) we can reduce the time that we spend in front of a computer screen.

D. Save our time.

You can show sketches of logo to your client and ask them which one they like. This saves our time because sometimes we work in a direction and the client rejects that idea. So you can sketch some logos and ask your client that can we go in this direction. If your sketching is professional you have a plus point i.e. you can impress the client by showing your sketches of logo lockups. You don’t even need to make logo mockups in computer. So all this save our huge time.

E. Helps in choosing the best idea.

When we come up with lots of ideas on a paper. Sometimes, we do not like some of them at a moment but when we see them after some hours (or days) we like them. So if we have pool of sketched ideas we can easily refine them or select best one.
